Susan Hacker Stang è una fotografa
statunitense innamorata di Firenze e dei suoi monumenti, che ha fatto delle
strade, delle piazze e dei palazzi della città il soggetto privilegiato
della sua ricerca artistica; fin qui niente di strano: sono decine i fotografi
americani che arrivano ogni anno a Firenze armati di zoom e cavalletti
per sperimentare nuove strade ed esprimere la propria creatività
anche attraverso tecniche inusuali. Nella ricerca di Susan Hacker si scorge
però la capacità di esprimere un sentimento molto diffuso
tra chi, venendo da molto lontano, osserva attentamente la città:
le foto, realizzate con il sistema Polaroid Emulsion Transfer, che conferisce
all’immagine l’effetto di una tela strappata e lacerata, esprimono tutto
lo struggimento che molti stranieri provano di fronte ai marmi, alle mura
scrostate e alle statue della città, magnifici e antichi manufatti
che suggeriscono l’inesorabilità del tempo e la caducità
dell’esistenza. Le foto sono accompagnate da brani di poesie e scritti
di grandi autori italiani e stranieri, messi a commento dei soggetti ritratti:
da Henry James ad Albert Camus, da Mario Luzi ad Aldo Palazzeschi. Una
città inedita e forse anche un pò inquietante dove ognuno,
come suggerisce la stessa autrice “può dunque provare il proprio
itinerario attraverso le pagine del libro e vivere Firenze in modo unico”.
